This five days workshop, sponsored by Department of Science & Technology, was organized by Apaji Institute of Mathematics & Applied Computer Technlogy, Banasthali Vidyapith, a deemed university for women. The workshop had more than 40 participants largely faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics drawn from different Indian universities and a big number from the host institution. In addition it was also attended by the M.Tech. students of Apaji Institute. The workshop had a number of academicians from the field as resource persons not only from top educational institutions and research organizations but also from the industry such as Dr. C.P.Ravikumar from Texas Instruments, Banglore.
Inaugurated by Prof. Diwakar Shastri, President, Banasthali Vidyapith, the five days workshop had nine sessions in all which were from distinctly two tracks, theoretical models of embedded computation, and, application in design of embedded systems. The workshop started with the theoretical track with an introduction to the very basic three models of computing namely Finite State Automata, Pushdown Automata and Turing Machines in the first talk by Prof. Aditya Shastri, Director, Banasthali Vidyapith. Prof. Naresh Jotwani, DAIICT, Gandhinagar then took the discussion further in his two lectures relating machines and languages and introducing the concept of polynomial time and nondeterministic polynomial time problems. He explained the interesting concept of P=NP. Simultaneously, Prof. Kamal Lodaya, IMSc. Chennai, brought in the concept of time in the automata models and presented his discussions on Timed Automata. In his second talk in the workshop he introduced Hybrid Automata applicable in Control domains where one needs hybridization of analog and digital models. He demonstrated the power of the model with an example control system of Temperature Control in heating water. While this track was taken further by Prof. Supratik Chakraborty, IIT, Mumbai latter on the fourth and fifth days by his very lucid presentations on the topic “Modelling and reasoning about Synchronization issues in interfacing rationally related clock domains”. Dr. R.S.Shekhawat , Secure Meters, Udaipur explained in detail the embedded architectures and system partitioning and Dr. A.S. Mandal from CEERI, Pilani talked on Shared State FSM and functionally driven automata partitioning. Prof. Kamala Kirthivasan from IIT, Chennai introduced the innovative models lately in use and future computing models such as molecular computing, evolutionary computing and membrane computing.
In the application track, on the second day Prof. Vineet Sahula from MNIT, Jaipur introduced the application of models to Embedded Hardware. The third day of the workshop had one full day tutorial on “System on Chip (SoC)” by Dr. C.P.Ravikumar. Dr. Ravikumar dealt with the topic in a very interesting manner starting from the basics of VLSI chips to multicore computing and then a peep into the future systems. Real embedded system indigenous applications were discussed and demonstrated by the scientists Dr. S.C. Bose, CEERI, Pilani and Dr. R.K.jain, BARC, Mumbai. The former presented the “Text to Speech” ASIP design while the latter presented the design methodology of “ANU Rheograph” , a biomedical embedded application. The most interesting part of the workshop was the live demonstration of this device by the end user Dr. Amitabh Dube, a senior Physiologist from SMS Medical College, Jaipur.
Thus the workshop started with the very basics and till the end went upto the ultimate in present and the futuristic perspective as well. The workshop also had presentations on embedded system tools from the industry representatives namely Integrated Microsystems on Tanner Tools and MEMS and Quarbz Marketing Pvt. Ltd. on Xilinx software and CPLD kits. The workshop was also attended by Dr. A.K.Singh, Senior Scientific Officer, DST, New Delhi who also introduced the participants to the various promotional schemes run by the department to enhance research in Mathematical Sciences and allied disciplines. He also took feedback from the participants in the Valedictory Session on the last day when the participation certificates were awarded to the participants by Prof. Chitra Purohit, Secretary, Banasthali Vidyapith.
During the workshop the students of Apaji Institute organized a cultural evening followed by Dinner which were appreciated by one and all.
