The Faculty consists of three departments namely

  • Department of English and Modern European Languages.
  • Department of Hindi and Modern Indian Languages.
  • Department of Sanskrit, Philosophy and Vedic Studies.

Department of English and Modern European Languages:

The Department functions on an interdisciplinary approach. It caters to the needs of scholars interested in the areas of Indian literature in English, English literature, American literature, Postcolonial Studies and Sanskrit Aesthetic theories. The Department runs regular courses in English, French and German. After being established in 1943 with the introduction of B.A. in English, the department started M.A. in 1963 and M.Phil (ELT) in 1987. German language instruction started in 1962 and was followed by the initiation of French language instruction in1963. Need based certificate courses in conversational English and German are also part of the academic programme of the department. German and French were introduced in the beginning as hobby courses but due to the demand and popularity now these are taught as Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses. The enrolment in German and French each reaches a strong figure of 1500 and above every year. To assist the pursuers of language the department has a fully equipped language laboratory.

The doctoral work is of high quality and is performed both in literature and language.

Student Exchange Programme

For student exchange programme a M.O.U. has been signed by Banasthali Vidyapith and  the Department of  German Youth Travellers Club of Gazi University, Ankara. Under this programme five students of Banasthali University, pursuing a course in German, went to Ankara, Turkey and stayed there during 9th February, 2006 to 18th February, 2006 along with a senior lecturer in German, Mrs. Hamsavahini Singh. They visited different faculties of the Gazi University, Ankara and Kirsheir Teachers Training School.

Department of Sanskrit, Philosophy and Vedic Studies:

This department also started with the other departments of the Faculty in 1943 with Bachelor's Programs. The postgraduate programs started after 1957. The department was established with of personalities like Pt. Jaydev Vidyalankar, Sri Ramchandra Waman Kumbhare, Prof. Pravin Chandra Jain and Pt. Jagdish Chandra Sharma (winner of President's Award). Vedic studies are offered to all the students of the Vidyapith as a part time course. Here the students learn to recite the Veda Mantras and learn all the Mantras for the sixteen Sanskars. The department is known for its quality research. Presently the students are pursuing research in Veda, Dharma shastra, Literature, Kavya, and Natya. It is perhaps due to the scientific methodology of Sanskrit education that the department has the history of highest number of NET and JRF students in the country. The department organizes various annual programs, national seminars and workshops. The department has started M.Phil. course from the session 2009-10.

Department of Department of Hindi and Modern Indian Languages:

The department of Hindi is one of the oldest  departments of Banasthali.The mission of the Department is to provide aesthetic, practical and moral education to the students by means of literature and language. The Department in addition to offering Hindi as a foundation course or an elective course at Bachelor's level and postgraduate level also assists in developing the communication skills and in personality development by organizing various seminars, workshops, debates and lectures. It gives a platform to the students to express themselves.

The department has a practice of inviting reputed personalities for lectures and seminars. The persons invited include Mahadevi Verma, Dr. Vidya Nivas Mishra, Dr. Amba Shankar Nagar, Dr. K. P. Singh, Dr. Asgar Vajahat, Dr. Nirmla Jain, Dr. Namita Singh and Kamleshwar to name a few. Effectiveness of the programmes of the department can be judged from the fact that the department's alumni include many postgraduate students from non Hindi speaking north eastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Andman and Nikobar, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura.

The department is conducting Ph.D. degree and has started M.Phil. course from the session 2006-07.
